KPOP is also known as Korean Pop music originating from South Korea. While it includes the words pop music, it is not exclusive to just pop music. KPOP is influenced by rock, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, folk, country, classical, etc.
KPOP began in 1996 with the boyband H.O.T and it continued to grow and along with it emerged three major companies, JYP, SM, and YG which dominated and continued to produce more and more idol groups and solos. KPOP became widely recognized throughout Asian countries and even gained some popularity in Western countries. This is also known as the Hallyu or "Korean Wave" which not only include KPOP but the general popularity of Korean culture. In the late 2010s is when KPOP became recognized worldwide with groups like BTS and Blackpink.
KPOP culture is very different compared to Western music culture with KPOP having fan signs, complex choreographies, group dynamics, fan chats, light sticks, etc. Despite it being different KPOP continues to grow internationally, with groups gaining more and more international fans.
BTS
BTS is playing a pioneering role in popularizing K-pop not only in Korea but also around the world. It is a Korean 7-member boy group under Big Hit Entertainment, which debuted on June 13, 2013. The group name'BTS' contains the meaning of defending their music and values by preventing prejudice and oppression in their teens and twenties who suffer through hard work during their lives, just as BTS blocks bullets.
