Newmedia.jpg

Mobile devices include smartphones, smartwatches, and tablet computers. There are an estimated 5 billion mobile phone connections in the world, not including computer and tablet users. These devices have enabled continuous communication between people from all over the world. Communication has never before been more accessible. [1]

First cellphone.jpg

The first cell phone was invented by Motorola in 1983. Motorola invented the Analog Motorola DynaTAC 8000 that has triggered a revolution of mobile phones. The inventor of the first cellphone was Martin Cooper who changed the way we communicate for the better. Martin Cooper had actually created cell phones to provide people with a convenient way to call rather than communicate through a car as AT&T was trying to accomplish. Convenient was not entirely accomplished as the size of the phone was that of a brick as well as the fact that the phone was not sold to everyone until the coming decade.[1] [2]

The iPhone featured Internet browsing, music and video playback, a digital camera, visual voice mail, and a contact list. It was revolutionary to combine the features of a phone with a music player and an Internet-enabled handheld device.

Other Types of Mobile Devices

FB vs Apple Watch.jpeg

Along with tablets, computers, and smartphones, mobile technology is moving into other sectors as well. The concept of home automation is creeping its way into technology and entering the mobile platform. Along with this, there are devices like Google Glass, FitBit, Samsung Gear Watch, Apple Watch, Apple TV, which all have some sort of mobile function that should be considered mobile devices.

Effects of Mobile Devices

Pros of Mobile devices

Mobile.JPG

Landlines were created to help keep people in contact. Mobile phones are an extension of that mission. It helps people stay connected with others regardless of time and location. People no longer needed to be at home to receive or make a call. It could now be done on-the-go. As technology has improved, mobile phones have become smartphones-- have more than the basic cellphone capabilities [44]. In addition, email applications on our mobile devices allow us to contact our work peers on-the-go when you’re not in the office allowing for some work-flexibility. Thus, mobile phones have had a significant improvement in human communication and interaction.

The innovation of mobile devices allows people to access the Internet at our fingertips rather than always having to resort to going to a desktop or a library for information. Through the use of the internet on our mobile devices, we can browse search engines and many other sites, just as if we were browsing on a desktop, allowing us to access the internet on-the-go.

Furthermore, applications on our mobile devices allow people to do an infinite amount of things. Now, there is an app for everything: games, books, education, entertainment, health, photography, shopping, etc. Also, mobile devices such as the Fitbit and Apple watch allow us to use these devices to keep track of our diet as well as health metrics such as calories burned, heart rate, etc. This shows to go the many uses mobile devices can have. [45]

in the same context, the growth of consumption has created many job opportunities, such as selling and repair stores, companies that provide network and internet, technicians, IT professionals, and apps developers

Cons of Mobile Devices

Cons mobile device.png

If not used in a conscious manner, mobile devices can also come with a few downfalls. A study found that Americans check their phones an average of every 12 minutes which is about 80 times a day [46]. This shows how integrated mobile use is in our lives. For example, there are people who have dinner with their family and friends but they are on their phones the entire time. This is interfering with face-to-face interaction. So, instead of helping us maintain our real-life connections, mobile phones may hurt them as well. Additionally, since mobile phone communication generally relies on voice and written messages, our nonverbal cues are not being transmitted. This may cause some problems since part of our message is not being sent to the other person. It can also make interactions more impersonal and detached.

The innovation of smartphones has come with a price as well. Access to the internet and cameras on smartphones can cause harm to learning abilities as well. Many educational facilities now have cheating and plagiarism rules because it has become easy to retrieve information from the web. In addition, mobile devices can be a distraction since they can now have many applications. It may get so out of hand that it may start to interfere with our job performance and grades. These distractions may result in harmful and dangerous situations. For example, texting and driving have become a major concern as the number of casualties has increased.

Social media access can also increase cyberbullying which is "bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones [and can occur] online in social media" [47]. Cyberbullying can hurt a person's mental health making them depressed. The content that causes this may lead to the people involved in losing their jobs.

It also puts our security and safety at risk because many applications use our location and information to provide their service. This may lead to stalking. Additionally, the availability of applications can leave us vulnerable to identity theft. For example, nowadays many people do not carry their wallets since every smartphone has a wallet application where you can add your credit or debit card and pay without inserting or sliding the card. Once you lose your phone, you are losing your credit card and phone together. So the convenience of smartphones does come with risks. Along the same lines, being exposed to these devices may cause some health complications. For instance, kids at a young age exposed to a smartphone may reduce their brain function and harm their intellect. Also, the radiation impact of smartphones may cause brain diseases. Also, a smart device has a psychiatrist effect; In recent studies, scientists have introduced a new terminology, “Nomophobia,” which is a medical term concern with social disorder and anxiety associated with the use of smartphones. In his article, “NOMOPHOBIA: NO MObile PHone PhoBIA”, Bhattacharya, sheds light on this new medical condition. He states, “The term NOMOPHOBIA or NO MObile PHone PhoBIA is used to describe a psychological condition when people have a fear of being detached from mobile phone connectivity.[48]

Another con of mobile devices is that we as humans love the newest and most updated pieces of technology, but sometimes we become too addicted and cannot stop using the devices. We become too reliant on these devices and use them 24/7. This can put a strain in our eyes and cause our vision to become worse over time. We often tend to need to check our social media messages or watch the latest YouTube videos at night when we are unable to sleep, and such bright ambient lighting in dark settings can affect our vision either temporarily or permanently. besides, a mobile phone may harm the environment, a smartphone consists of many elements that might not be environment-friendly. Smartphones contain chemicals that hurt the environment, dealing with recycling.

Cons of mobile devices on teens

What is the impact of mobile phones on young people’s social life? Teenagers are totally addicted to texting. Excess messaging can lead to Teen Tendonitis (TTT). It can cause pain in the hands, back and neck due to poor posture. It can also lead to impaired vision and even arthritis down the line. Having a cell phone will tempt your teen to spend all day talking or texting, instead of doing anything productive. Studies have proven that teens who spend too much of their time with their cell phones are more prone to stress and fatigue. It can also lead to psychological disorders in some cases. Also, Teens are more likely to respond to calls, text while driving, and riding than adults. They talk and text on the phone without realizing that it can cost their lives. Even the U.S. Government Website for Distracted Driving has proven that traffic crashes are the leading cause of death in teens. Most of the teens keep their cell phones nearby while sleeping to respond to texts and calls. They feel pressurized to remain reachable around the clock. It leads to sleep interruption and disruption. Teens also become irritable when they are sleep deprived. Research shows that electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobile phones get absorbed in the tissues when we hold the phone for longer times. The nervous systems of teens are still developing and have a greater risk of developing brain cancer from cell phones than adults.

There are many pros and cons that mobile devices have. It’s up to us, the users, on how they will affect us. [49]
