New Media

In this modern era, there are various ways and platforms for social networking and the ability to communicate with friends, family members and engage with others. it is important to know that New Media relies heavily on the internet to function maximally and for the purpose of distribution. It is also acknowledged as a highly digital interactive technology. Some examples of new media are websites, Mobile Apps, Social Media such as LinkedIn, Snapchat, Skype among others. We will be analyzing how the media platforms operate, how many more are out there and among other things, how new media relate to our day-to-day activities.

Donald Trump Finds Support in Reddit’s Unruly Corners by JOHN HERRMAN! This is one great example of how New Media might be a useful tool to have but also a very assertive instrument. In this article of the New York Times, we see that a website that gains a lot of popularity for helping to attract more support for Obama’s campaign has also become an instrument of bigotry, ethnic and religious exclusion. To see that a presidential candidate is using materials coming from one of the groups that are taking part in practices such as oppression of people with different religious beliefs or from the different racial backgrounds is somewhat revolting. His campaign might point out the fact that they just received the video via a link on Twitter, however, their whole purpose is to analyze everything that might affect their leader’s campaign, whether it is in a positive or negative way, as the election for the leader of the free world is in the balance. By them, using the video, they are indirectly acknowledging the group and giving them incentives and encouragement towards their practices.

[1] Skype is an IP telephony service provider that offers free calling between subscribers and low-cost calling to people who don't use the service. In addition to standard telephone calls, Skype enables file transfers, texting, video chat and video conferencing. The service is available for desktop computers, notebook and tablet computers and other mobile devices, including mobile phones. A number of companies, including Skype, produce dedicated Skype phones. Skype's benefits, beyond the free and low-cost calls, are said to include easy set-up and good audio quality. To use Skype from a desktop computer, you just plug in a headset, a specialized VoIP phone or a regular phone (via an analog telephone adapter). [1] Skype for business allows companies to have company-wide communication with a bunch of great features. You have a built-in IM system that also doubles as your phone, attaching a headset allows you to make both internal and external phone calls. Skype for Business can be downloaded on a bunch of devices, this could be good for companies that have employees who travel a lot or work for home. You can connect Skype for business to your work email account and this will save all of your conversations. This is a great way that new media helps enhance communication throughout companies.

Skype is at the forefront for businesses that operate in a global setting and the cost of a person to person meeting is either extremely inconvenient or just downright too expensive. With the invention of Skype and other video calling programs like it, they have helped change the way people interact virtually as "in person". Skype has simplified an age-old process. The Skype video call is unlike a phone call because you can see the other person. A boss can see if the other individual or individuals isn't paying attention or making eye contact. A Skype video call is exactly like a meeting except the one major difference is you're not directly in front of the person you're skyping with but by being able to see the other person you can still get your point across and convey your message as you would in any meeting in real time.

When you send a message through iMessage, your text turns blue, this is an indication that the other user is an iPhone user as well. If the text a user sent was in a blue bubble it indicates an iMessage, however, if it turns green, a regular text message was sent. The great part about iMessage is that it can be sent to any iOS user not only to iPhone users but anyone using any iOS enabled device such as iWatch, iPad, iPod, Mac. It features over 250 million active users who have sent over 300 billion iMessages. Keep in mind that iMessage is not interoperable with Android devices, if you send a message to an Android user using your iPhone, the message will be sent as an SMS. [20]

There are also typing indicators on the main message screen to see multiple people typing at once. The next function is the pinned function. The pin function allows active group chats to stay at the top of your messaging screen, in the case where a user socially active, it becomes difficult to manage and find these chats. Fun fact: Typing indicators on pinned chats will line up with the mouths for people who have a portrait photo or a Memoji selected as their shared image. [21] Inline functions also allow people in a conversation target selective messages to respond to, which lessens the ambiguity of a response. Mentions and Memoji are the remaining functions that were built in with the update. Mentions allow people to tag someone in their messages to directly refer to them, while Memoji is the customizable avatar of your online persona.

WhatsApp

Waiting.jpg

WhatsApp is a 'cross-stage informing application which permits clients to trade messages without paying for SMS.' The application is good for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Nokia, and different Windows advanced cells. WhatsApp highlights incorporate one-on-one talk, bunch visit, push notices, sending and getting both video and sound records. WhatsApp Inc. was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former employees of Yahoo!, based in Mountain View, California, was acquired by Facebook in February 2014 for approximately US$19.3 billion. By April 2014 it was evaluated that WhatsApp had roughly 500 million clients, who send and get more than 64 billion messages a day. By February 2016, WhatsApp had a user base of over one billion, making it the most popular messaging application at the time.

Economically, WhatsApp pierced an industry strewn with the high cost and limited options. According to “Going Abroad? Don’t be afraid to pack the cell phone,” 2009 featured a sour economy that discouraged international travel altogether, making those who did travel weary of additional costs like cell phone usage: “But stories of $3,000 iPhone bills when we return have scared many consumers into turning off their phones or leaving them at home.”[26] In 2009, Verizon charged $0.50 USD for sending SMS texts and at least $0.49 cents per minute for calls. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint charged comparable prices for international data and phone plans. At the same time, WhatsApp charged phenomenally less than all of these large corporations for international messaging and calls – the two most important aspects of the cellular phone. WhatsApp’s two 2009 price-points were $1 to download then unlimited use after, or free to download and $1 a year after the first free year, dependent on the user’s host country [27] Appropriately, many turned to WhatsApp instead of their cell phone providers for international phone use. Only WhatsApp’s required Internet connection proves a continued shortcoming, but many prefer searching for Internet hotspots to connect to versus paying up to their cell phone providers.

WhatsApp has tipped the Smartphone into the standard culture. The Smartphone has changed life on a worldwide scale, incorporating into creating nations. In South Africa, for instance, in spite of various social applications that have been presented, not very many have been as broadly gotten as WhatsApp, which today is utilized by 15 million supporters; contrasted with Facebook with 9 million and Mix it with 7 million endorsers. As per an arrangement of Google inquiry measurements beginning from South Africa for 2011, WhatsApp.com was seen to be the most "googled" and downloaded website in that nation. The way that WhatsApp was brought into the market in 2009, and has achieved a large portion of a billion dynamic clients in under five years, speaks to an amazing achievement by any measure and would recommend that this fast dissemination and far-reaching selection. [28]

From the perspective of some international governments, WhatsApp hinders the task of protecting citizens. In some places, WhatsApp’s encryption is illegal. In 2016, Brazilian authorities arrested a Facebook executive for failing to provide the communications data of users being investigated for drug trafficking [29] In India, any encryption above 40-bit requires explicit government approval, effectively deeming WhatsApp’s 256-bit encryption illegal at the same time as the situation in Brazil.[30] “Here’s Why Wall Street’s Love of WhatsApp Is Illegal” by Lucinda Shen explains how the app’s business use by financial executives in the United States harshly counter laws from the Securities and Exchange Commission that “require financial firms to keep records of all communications.”[31] In response to all government and citizen outcry for not providing user’s communications in investigations of criminals, WhatsApp repeatedly replies that it cannot provide information it doesn’t receive, and always favors on the side of consumer privacy.

WhatsApp implies to portable endorsers' impression of the relative simplicity and absence of exertion required to utilize the informing application. PEU has firmly identified with Rogers' (1995) idea of "unpredictability" which he characterizes as 'how much development is seen as generally hard to comprehend and to utilize,' seeing the 'apparent multifaceted nature of advancement as adversely identified with its rate of appropriation.' PU, then again, reflects PDA clients' subjective evaluation of the degree to which WhatsApp will enhance their lives; at the end of the day, their view of the utility or advantages got from utilizing WhatsApp. [32]

WhatsApp was adequately used to complete the seven-week-long teachers‟ strike in 2012 in Swaziland while Clayton found that developing informing applications like Snapchat, Kik, WhatsApp, and WeChat are obviously filling a shopper requirement for new components of correspondence, drawing time spend from the most settled interpersonal organizations. These applications are esteemed for their effortlessness, highlighting a shopper inclination that could direct future advertising openings. The study investigated the utilization of the main informing applications, what's driving informing application selection, where the impacts are being borne out, and future projections. [33]

It was likewise found that in Brazil, Newspaper Extra brought WhatsApp application into their newsroom particularly through their PC and they guaranteed the benefits of utilizing such application was steady stage, less expensive than content informing, easy to understand, hyper closeness with pursuers and more youthful newsroom since 90% of the populace had mobile phone and 47% had PC and the web get to. New Media and Entrepreneurship

MediaEnt.png

Media and Entrepreneurship as stated earlier, is seen and widely known as one of the most important and prominent avenues to dominate lives and this comes off as no surprise to many because it has come to play a resolute part in the growth of the society in terms of entrepreneurship. Media Entrepreneurship is seen as a modern repercussion of technological digital media and an embrace of entrepreneurs as an economic platform in various communities. This platform is also known as a good platform to foster creativity and entrepreneurial movement. A research conducted and concluded by the media entrepreneur in Iran, concluding that there are frameworks available that controls these factors such as related strategy, related enterprise factor, related product, resources that are related as well as an environmental framework.

It has also been concluded that the social media platform is one that provides a possibility for the growth of the economy in developing countries or otherwise but support is required to enhance the business approach and information in its first stages. The framework presented is to help get them ready to develop an equilibrium amid diverse areas and support their starting point for their next research in media entrepreneurship. Media entrepreneurship circles around generating a software or technological product and introducing new products into the market should be as a result of what the desires of the people are. The question of “if this is what people need or crave for” should probably be the focus of the creation of a product or business. Once the desire is known then the question of if the desire is something that is within the ability of the entrepreneur to embark on; can it be delivered and on time. Once this is achieved, there is also the part of maintainability; can it be maintained in such a way that the business will keep on experiencing growth on every side.

The relevance or importance of entrepreneurship to the media cannot be overemphasized in this modern era. From yet another angle, entrepreneurial factors have outstanding effects on new media related industries provided they are within the lifestyle and innovation related enterprises. The primary advantages of the entrepreneurship movement such as creativity are essential in the development of the success of media enterprises. As Khajeheian (2013) states, media entrepreneurship plays an important role in influencing the entrepreneurship phenomenon, by creating a discourse that transmits values and images ascribed to entrepreneurship, providing a career promoting entrepreneurial practices. Through these platforms, entrepreneurs and media have great potential and positive effect in various societies. There is also the part of the self rule attributed to the products of new media that are more similar to the aspect of the movement of entrepreneurship such as creativity, innovation, autonomy, proactive and risk- taking. The risk taking part I find important because in the context of new media and entrepreneurship and in order for entrepreneurs to venture into a new line of business like beauty and lifestyle influencers on social media such as Instagram, they must be willing to take risk even when they don’t have enough followers in the beginning stage; they must be able to gain the trust of social media customers, grow their followers genuinely and not buying followers; being able to advertise the brand in an attractive way and can also take advantage of the advertising platforms Instagram provides. For example, Instagram can inform you as a business owner to advertise with them and they will also let you know where these adverts will be advertised and distributed.

They also do this for a fee and provide you with the option of putting your adverts up for any duration of time you want, but it all depends on budget reserve and your ability to keep up. This advertising platform may help in promoting your brand or business to a certain extent but may not gather the necessary population or followers you may need to be seen and yet recognized as a style influencer, hence the reason why as a New Media entrepreneur, there are still risks involved. Which is why I think it is important to weigh the pros and cons of venturing in a new media business; there should be enough convincing research before moving into such a phase of business.

Budding businesses are breaking new grounds and becoming successful because of media entrepreneurs in order to get the shares of the market via the social media factor. Social media has changed the way the majority of people look and approach business irrespective of circumstances. This is attributed to technological platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram etc. ever since their arrival, the cost of production has been on the low and as a result, quite a lot of the exquisite markets that was needed to move this aspect of business forward have become profitable while the production cost continue to decline at a fast level. In recent times, these new media entrepreneurs have carved a niche for themselves by using the resources naturally now available to them have systematically reduced costs and have become a major partaker and player in the market, definitely not as an opponent anymore because as many of them know they are not competing with anyone. This is a pattern that is totally different from what the market and the society used to know or may have experienced in time past. Khajeheian (2011) argues this new development became part of a major role during the recession era. Which could be potentially correct because according to research some of these market sectors will become more influential for greater proceeds.

GOAT

Goat App

[2]

GOAT is an app which was founded in 2015 in Los Angeles, California. The founders Eddy Lu and Daishin Sugano created the application in order to provide sneakerheads a place to buy and sell sneakers. When the application was first introduced, it raised over $5 million at the time. [42] Unsure of the outcome the company would face, this investment paid off ten-fold as it became one of the leading shopping applications on both the Android and iOS platforms. It has raised over $160 million through investments since its creation through the help of other companies like FlightClub and FootLocker. [43] Having over 7 million users a part of the platform, people can shop from the widest variety of sneakers available in any marketplace. Buyers can see up to 75,000 sneakers whether they browse through the website or the app. For sellers, their account must first be verified before they are able to list any sneakers. Once their account is verified, they will be able to list sneakers only if they attach photos of their product. A unique feature of the app is the point system created for the sellers. The seller starts off with 90 points in their account and each sale will add 2 points to their seller rating. In order to maintain the standard commission rate of 9.5%, the seller must remain above 90 points. Each cancellation to a sale will result in a loss of 10 points and an increase in their commission once they fall below that threshold. After 150 points are achieved, the seller will no longer need to manually take photos in order to sell their items, and their commission fee will be at 9.5%. [44]

After a sneaker is sold on the app, it must be shipped to one of three different authentication facilities to be verified for authenticity. Once it passes this test, the product will be repackaged and shipped to the buyer. If the sneaker is deemed to be unauthentic, the buyer will be notified and the sneaker will be shipped back to the seller. In the case that the sneaker has visual defects upon arrival to the facility, the seller will be given the option to provide the buyer with a discount ranging from 0%-20%. Thousands of sales are being made on the app on a daily basis, so having strong authenticators is a key component in maintaining a strong work flow.

StockX

StockX.png

StockX was founded in 2015 in Detroit, Michigan by Josh Luber. It was created in order to become an online marketplace to buy and sell things such as sneakers, streetwear, watches, and designer handbags. They successfully raised over millions over the years, with their latest round of funding nearing close to $44 million. [45] StockX was created in order to ease both the buyer and seller experience, competing directly with applications like GOAT. Some of the main features that separate StockX from its competitors include the ability to sell more than just sneakers, and allowing for sellers to change their prices with increments of as low as $1 differences. The easy access to this marketplace is one of the reasons is leading against its competitors as there is a minimal verification process.

The buying and selling experience is designed to provide keep the whole process as simple as possible. As a buyer, you are able to keep track of current offers that are placed, pending purchases, and your previous purchase history. As a seller, you can easily list any item on the website by entering the SKU or name of the product. From here, you are able to list it at a price and either decrease or increase based on the current market for the item. There is also an option to accept the current bids available, and the seller is also able to view various things including items listed, items that are pending shipment, and items that were sold in the past. [46]. StockX has become one of the most prominent marketplaces to buy and sell different items and is only continuing to expand.

SLACK

Slack Logo

Slack is a cloud-based collaboration tool and service. It was founded by Stewart Butterfield. It is an acronym for "Searchable Log of All Conversation and Knowledge". It was launched in 2014. Slack offers a numerous amount of features. You can have organized chatrooms by topic, private, and direct messaging. You can search through your conversations to find files, past conversations, and people. Slack supports third-party service integration like google drive, trello, dropbox, and more! Slack has grown so much since then and has spread their locations to many different places like London, Dublin, Lemourne, New York, and Tokyo. With Slack, everyone is accessible at any time through texting, calling, or video chatting.[47]

Slack is extremely popular for work environments due to their instant messaging and different groups. Multichannel communication allows those on the same teams or groups to communicate easily regarding any work or projects done. This platform is seen as appropriate and acceptable for work conversations. Additionally, Slack has soared in popularity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and work-from-home becoming very popular. It has been so successful that Salesforce has acquired Slack for over $27 billion [48], making it the largest acquisition for the company. This deal estimates Slack at over 24 times its expected revenue for the next fiscal year [49].
