This page is intended to clarify generic terms that are proliferating because of new media. Each term is defined briefly and is linked to articles that relate to it.

A

A form of communication that persuades the consumer to buy a particular item or brand.

Aggregation

A feed aggregator, also known as a feed reader or news reader, is client software or a Web application which brings together syndicated web content such as news headlines, blogs, podcasts, and vlogs in a single location for easy viewing.

API

API stands for Application Programming Interface which is a programming format that allows websites to interact with other websites.

Application

Application is software program design to support and portrait similar features like a website.

Authenticity

Used to describe a celebrity profile that is "real"

Avatar

A picture or icon that represents someone on social media sites, online computer games and forums.

B

B2B

Business to Business: Business transaction between company and company, which can be a wholesaler selling goods to a retail store [1]

B2C

Business to Consumer: Business transaction directly between company and consumers who are the end users of the goods or services [1]

Big Data

Big Data is the enormous amount of both structured and unstructured data existing in our world now. [2]

Blog, Blogger, to Blog

Online web page that allows people to create their own pages with posts (made of text, images, video etc) and be able to critically express themselves and be commented by other people.

Blogroll

A list of recommended sites that appears in the sidebar of a blog. These sites are typically sites that are either on similar topics, sites that the blogger reads regularly, or sites that belong to the blogger's friends or colleagues. The term "blogroll" also evokes the concept of political logrolling (when legislators promise to vote for one another's pet bills) -- which is not unlike bloggers' habit of reciprocating links by posting links to blogs that link back to their own blogs.

Bookmark

Record the address of (a Web site, file, etc.) for quick access by a user

Bulk Mailing

third-class postal handling of not less than 200 pieces (copies of a publication, for example weighing 20 lbs. or more under a permit or with precanceled stamps) if delivered to post office in bundles sorted by states and cities of address and tied with string.

Camcorder

A digitally encoded recording on an optical disk that is smaller than a phonograph record; played back by a laser.

Channel

A medium for communication or the passage of information

Celebrity

A person who is famous (Usually for their talent)

Chat

Any sort of communication done online, usually through a chat based application.

Circles

Circles are clusters of a user's friends, colleagues, family, or connections on Google+

Convergence of media

Changing of old media such as newspaper,magazines and radio into new media with the help of technology.

Creative Commons

A nonprofit organization to encourage and facilitate the sharing of digital information.

Crowdfunding

The process of funding projects or ventures by raising money from large groups of people, most commonly online.

Crowd-sourcing

The process of getting work, ideas or funding, usually online, from a crowd of people. Most commonly used as an alternative to traditional employees or suppliers.

Craigslist

A popular online commerce website that allows users to list their items for sale. It doesn't have to be an "item" it could be any sort of listing, such as an apartment.

D

Domain Name

A name that is used to identify one or more IP addresses, used to access website

Direct Message

Also known as a "DM" are private conversation on Twitter and Instagram between users.

E

E-Business

E-Business</Electronic Business is the use of ICT's and integrating it into all activities of a business.[3]Some example of E-Business' are Amazon.com, Dell.com, EBay.com [4]

E-Commerce

E-Commerce/Electronic Commerce is the buying, selling and trading of products and services through computer networks like the Internet. [5] Examples of E-Commerces are American Eagle Outfitters online, and Disney Sony Store.[6]

E-Learning

Type of education where individuals work on independently from any Internet connected location and communicate with faculty and other students via e-mail, electronic forums, videoconferencing and other forms of computer-based communication.

Engage

To obtain or involve. If you are one of the social media user, then you are engaging in. [1]

E-paper

A book or paper published in digital form. [1]

An online indication that you like something. There are different versions depending on website, Twitter has a star, Instagram has a heart and Facebook has a thumbs up

Facebooking

File Sharing

File sharing is accessing or sharing of files by one or more users.

Feed

A web feed (or news feed) is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content.

Followers

People that connect with you through subscribing to receive updates from your posts on social media sites such as Twitter and Instagram.

Freeleech

In P2P filesharing system, freeleech is a file that doesn't required downloading user to seed it back to another user to earn point.

Friendster

Friendster is a social gaming site that is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was previously known as a social networking service website.

Globalization

The process of extending social relations across world space.

Geotag

Directional coordinates that can be attached to a piece of content online, used on Instagram and Snapchat. Snapchat allows users to post an icon of the city or town the picture was taken.

Ghosting

The practice of ending a personal relationship with someone by suddenly and inexplicably withdrawing all types of communication especial social media. A person would avoid, ignore and be unresponsive without cause.

Influence

An individual's importance online. Measured by the Klout Score, a measurement of online influence.

Instagram

An app that allows for photo and video sharing used most prevalent on smart phones, people can like and share videos or photos and gain followers.

iPosture

A physical condition in which a person experiences neck or back pain as a result of frequently looking down at their smartphone for long periods of time. Also called "Text Neck".

iOS

iOS is an operating software/system on which mobile devices made by Apple run on[8]. The latest version of the software is iOS 8. [9]

To send or receive real time video and audio over the internet.

Lying low, Taking cover, Keeping out of sight

Mashup

A web service or software tool that combines two or more tools to create a whole new service.

M-Commerce

The use of cellular devices to conduct commercial transactions online.

Microblogging

A form of multimedia blogging that allows users to send brief text updates or micromedia such as photos or audio clips and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user. These messages can be submitted by a variety of means, including text messaging, instant messaging, E-mail, digital audio or the web.

Meme

The idea of taking viral concepts and making it everyday lingo. [12]

MMORPG

The acronym MMORPG stands for "Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game."

Navigation

Menu of links or buttons allowing users to move from one web page to another.

Near Field Communication (NFC)

A wireless technology that enables short range communications between nearby devices.

Newsfeed=

A feed of news that consists of updates users post of Facebook

Nomophobia

Short for "no mobile phone phobia"; The inability to go any length of time without thinking about your smartphone. Also called "Smartphone Addiction".

OMG

Abbr. for "Oh My God"

OOTD

Abbr for "Outfit of the Day." One of the most popular hashtags on social media websites and apps.

Open Source

Relating to, or being computer software for which the source code is freely available for use and development.

P

Pandora

An online radio station that allows users to create their own music stations based on their preference and skip songs. Just as regular radio stations, there are commercials and advertisements but users can upgrade to a version that has less commercials and more skips.

Permalink

An address or URL or a particular post.

Podcast=

An audio blog that is put out daily or weekly or monthly

P2P

This acronym stands for peer-to-peer: a distributed network architecture (centralized or not) that enables participants to share data openly.

Podcast

A type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio, video, PDF, or ePub files subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device.

Platform

A system that manages content. Example: Blogger.com is a platform that manages social media on blogs.

Reddit

Social news site that has different sections or "subreddits" based on user preference and taste. It allows users to share content and also communicate through comments and forums.

Retweet

When a Twitter users sees a tweet they like and share it with their own friends and followers.

Retrieval

the act of regaining or saving something lost

RSS

RSS stands for Rich Site Summary, which is a format used to syndicate content from sites that support this function. Content from blogs, online news sources, and essentially any site that uses RSS can be seen in one feed off a device. This is helpful if you tend to visit several websites a day in order to read its published information, with RSS you will receive a constant update on your device whenever information is published from the sites that you have added to your RSS feed.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization: The process of organizing your website to give it the best chance of appearing near the top of search engine rankings.

Seeding

The process of sharing media, music, games, apps and more by uploading the downloaded files back in P2P filesharing system.

Selfie

A self portrait that is taken with the front facing camera or a "selfie-stick"

Smartphone Addiction

The inability to go any length of time without thinking about your smartphone. Also called "Nomophobia".

Snapchat

Snapchat is a mobile app designed for users to share pictures with one another. Sending "snaps" is a method of striking conversations with others through images captured by the mobile phone's camera.

Social Networking

The process of communicating and exchanging information in a virtual world.

Social Bookmarking

A storage of bookmarks within a web browser. The website lets users store their favorite websites and also share them with other users.

Streaming Device

Also known as Digital media streamer or digital media player, are devices have the capability of allowing users to stream content from popular websites such as YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Google Play Play and Amazon and display it on a TV. They have a user friendly interface and processors capable of fast video streaming.

Tabloids

News source that is mainly focused on reporting on celebrities

Tag

Indicates or labels what a content about or tag someone you know to notify certain messages. Example: name tag on Tweeter or Facebook.

Text Claw

A physical condition characterized by cramping in your hand as a result of frequent texting and smartphone use for long periods of time.

Text Neck

A physical condition in which a person experiences neck and back pain as a result of frequently looking down at their smartphone for long periods of time. Also called "iPosture".

Transparency

Users of social media expects to engage in online conversations with business and community.

Trending

A popular word, phrase, or topic on Twitter at a certain time.

Troll

A person that is known for starting drama on social media; deliberately offensive or vulgar with intention of angering others.

TTYL

Abbr. for " Talk to you later."

Upload

The process of sharing a file by transferring that file from a personal devices to social media websites.

Vodcast

Vine

A video sharing platform that enables users to upload six second long video clips. [13].

Vlogging

Viral

When a video, picture, or any kind of media content has been extensively viewed and discussed by the online community through social media.

Virtual World

A computer-based simulated environment intended for its users to inhabit and interact via avatars. These avatars are usually depicted as textual, two-dimensional, or three-dimensional graphical representations.

Webinar

A seminar that takes place on the web where the lecture or presentation can be seen over the Internet.


Web 1.0

The first generation of web development that carries flat data. It's non-interactive website that does not allow comments, edits, feedback or reviews.

Web 2.0

The second generation of the Web, which is an improvement from Web 1.0. People can create their own websites without needing special skills or training.

Wiki

A Web site developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing any user to add and edit content.

Widget

A third party item that can be embedded in a web page and executed within any separate Web page without requiring additional compilation. A widget can be compared to a plug-in in desktop operations.

A customer review site that allows people to comment and post pictures of local businesses such as restaurants, salons, doctor's offices and much more.
