FIRST THINGS FIRST
  • Do NOT open Blackboard. You will work much better by simply opening a browser window and typing the url for this wiki in the address bar.
  • Open this page in a new window or a new tab so that you can go back and forth between your work on the wiki and this page of instructions.

NOW, FOR TODAYS LAB
1. Create a BaruchNewMedia user account
NOTE: You will only be able to do this during the registration period at the beginning of each semester.
On the top right of the page, Click on "Log in / create account"
Click on "Create an account"
Create a userid and password for yourself.
Your userid should be constructed as follows: <first letter of your first name><full last name><any 3 digits>.
Fill in the requested information - Submit
Email your Prof the username you have created for yourself. This will be proof of "attendance" in the lab session.

2. Check out your Preferences page
Go to "mypreferences" on the top right of the page.
Click on the "Date and time" tab.
In the "time zone" area, click "fill in from browser"
Click Save.
NOTE: If you change the settings on the Skin tab, you will change the "look and feel" of the BNM wiki site (but only to your userid).

3. Upload a photo
Click "Upload file" in the BaruchNewMedia toolbox at the left of your screen.
Click "Browse" to find the photo in your local computer.
Keep or change "Destination filename".
Remember that other folks may use similar names. So, for example, if you name your picture me.jpg someone else may do the same and end up overwriting your photo with theirs.
In "Summary" give a brief description of this file. For example, John Smith's photo.
Click "Upload file"
You can check that your photo uploaded correctly by going to either Gallery of new files or File list.

4. Your user page
Top right - click on your username (should be in red)
Click on "edit this page."
Enter your real name and your email address
Flesh out your bio. For example, you can use the content from your Blackboard homepage.
Look at the other bio pages and user pages in the BaruchNewMedia.com wiki and figure out how to do the following:
Put 'section headings' in your bio. Note that if you have more than 3 sections, your bio page will automatically have a Table of Contents at the top.
Put a picture of yourself - the one you uploaded in Step #3 - in your bio.
Click "Save page"

5. Link to your user page from the Baruchnewmedia:Community_Portal page of the wiki
Find your class and add your name.
Try for alphabetical order, if you can. :) Best way to do that is to bring up the course roster in Blackboard so you can see where you fit in order.
REMEMBER that all the other CIS 3810 students in all sections of this course will be trying to edit this page during this time. ETIQUETTE: To avoid conflicts, (1) check the discussion tab before you edit to see if someone is already working on the page and (2) edit the discussion page with a message like:
I'M WORKING HERE ~~~~.
The four tildes automatically insert your signature. Then remove it when you are done with your editing.
