The proliferation of new media has grabbed the attention of companies and made them realize the potential within it. Social media can boosts a company’s image and customer base.

Comedy Central’s Daily Show

In 2015, when the Daily Show host, Jon Stewart, announced his retirement from the show, many speculated who the new host might be. Comedy Central took it upon themselves to take advantage of this hype. The utilized Google Adwords and social media to promote the show. The network bought Google ads that had links to a secret video that showed Trevor Noah’s name together with search terms such as: Trevor Noah’s house, Trevor Noah’s wife, Trevor Noah is old?, Trevor Noah sexuality, etc. These terms were terms that people searched when looking up celebrities. The videos that were attached to these search terms were unlisted and un-embeddable and were made this way so that they can only be accessed if manually searched for.

Social media platforms like UPROXX, Slate, Reddit, and the A.V. Club carried the hype around the mystery videos and joined in on the search for the new host. The huge attention gain helped propel the show to new heights of excitement. [1]

The result of such a campaign made it so that the audience was engaged and ready to take on the new host.


The Omnipresent Deadpool

To promote their new superhero movie, Marvel Studios employed an advertisement firm to broadcast Deadpool everywhere. To do so, they did something akin to the character Deadpool.

The advertisement content were characterized as being crass, in your face, and ultimately funny like the character. Doing so created a cult-like following and had fans anticipating the release of the movie.

The team created obnoxious billboards, hilarious teasers, trailers, tv spots, and social media. On the social media platform, they created custom emojis and even fabricated a twitter war between Wolverine and Deadpool. [1]

Making Deadpool into a reality character definitely brought in the new watchers to the theater.
