Astrology comes from the Greek word "asteri," meaning star. Astrology is the study of how cosmic objects, such as stars and planets influence human lives. The position of certain objects such as the sun, moon, stars, and planets at one’s birth is thought to have lasting effects on their personality traits. Many also relate it back to possible situations and relationships in one’s life. Relationships such as lovers and family members. As well as economic and social standpoints in one’s life. Sun-sign astrology is the easiest and most common form of astrology because all one needs is their respective birth date in order to have a horoscope. Within western astrology, there are still different diversifications.

These include:

Mundane Astrology which is commonly used to examine and predict world events

Interrogatory Astrology which is used to predict specifics about objectives or occurrences in one’s life.

Natal astrology which is the most common form which makes predictions based on one’s birth. Where each specific birthdate is assigned to one of the 12 signs. This is most common form found on social media sites, and posts from friends and family members one knows. [1]

History of Astrology

Unlike popular beliefs, Greeks actually did not fully create astrology but they did have an influence on what it is today. The Greeks actually got inspired from the Babylonians scripture, which was written in cuneiform. They took the script in cuneiform and translated it into the Greek language. This newly deciphered scripture was then spread by word of mouth by a local priest. The original use of astrology was to predict weather patterns for agriculture purposes; eventually leading to forecasting natural disasters, war, and then used to counsel kings and emperors.[2] The Greeks introduced the use of astrology and horoscopes as a way to understand how people and animals behave the way they do. This belief continued into the the 21st century and is now used by some to determine the past, present, and future.

Palm.jpeg

Thanks to new media, you no longer have to learn how to read your own palm, nor do you need to be able to understand why the alignment of stars and moons affect the way you may be acting. These mobile applications that we have today do all the work for you so you get all of the play. There are so many apps today that you can download off your cellular devices with multiple versions that do the same thing. However, these apps don't always have the same readings, effectively resulting in differentiation. By using new media, these applications make it convenient for people to do these readings in the comfort of their own home. Horoscopes have been known to make people believe that they have sight into what is to come in the future and even give some people hope. Horoscopes tell people to not worry about certain things they are contemplating about or whether or not to act on certain things. Sometimes people genuinely believe these readings and others just read it for fun.

Similarly, there even exists palm reading apps where you can now scan your hand via your phone camera, and using its technology, the app reads your hands and determines what your hand is saying about you. Of course, no reading should ever be trusted to be 100% correct, however, palm reading apps do, in fact, do something different. Instead of predicting the future, palm readings can also measure and detect the lines on the palm of your hand and tell you what those lines mean.

There are many free websites where you can find your natal chart, all you need is: your time of birth and location of where you born. The most critical aspect is the time because it could reflect the degree of certain signs. Many sites and astrologers provide natal reading chart services in which you pay to understand certain placements. Each sign as a planetary rulership (ex: Leo is ruled by the Sun). There are 12 houses in astrology and 10 zodiac signs. The twelve houses are divided into different areas of your life and in which they also have their specific zodiac sign rulership. The 1st house is the personality and appearance, this is generally what people know themselves to be before they dive in deeper into astrology. Astrology is a wonderful way to understand yourself a little more deeper, it doesn't justify your actions or personality but instead could explain certain ways you analyze things.

Zodiac Signs

Learning about zodiac signs has become increasingly popular throughout the years due to new media. By easily typing into a search engine you will learn everything about your zodiac sign and how your personality is because you are a Scorpio or Gemini. For the most part, people agree with what their sign says about how they act and what they may like or dislike. However, the convenience of learning about your zodiac sign may have negative effects on how seriously the topic is taken by society. It all started in about 2000B.C. when Babylonian astrologers believed that 5 planets (Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, and Venus), the sun, and the moon had certain powers[2]. As the years went on, there was no science to back up the information and eventually lead to Zodiac signs to be a joke.

New Media's Effect

There has been a growing popularity of Zodiac signs online. Tumblr, Tweeter, Instagram, and YouTube have specific accounts dedicated to specific websites. The rise of content based on the Zodiac sign has also taken place. The Zodiac signs are used in a creative way to express art. Many YouTubers use makeup style based on their Zodiac sign. [File:SafiyaNygaard.jpg|200px|thumb|right|Safiya Nygaard- I Dressed According To My Zodiac Sign For A Week]]Zodiac signs were originally a very respectable topic but now, through the chaos and creativity that new media creates, it has become a top meme of 2018. Instagram accounts dedicate themselves to show you outfits that you should wear based on your zodiac sign. The idea is that the outfit would fit you perfectly because it is supposed to correlate with what your zodiac sign says your personality would like. Safiya Nygaard, a YouTuber, made a video where, for a week, she dressed as her zodiac sign according to various websites. She found that almost none of the outfits fit her personality and was actually quite the opposite[6]. Due to the inaccuracy of these websites, it adds to the stigma that zodiac signs are just made up and a big joke.

Even though people do not take astrology seriously, there has been a burst of popularity because of the age of the internet. The reason is that there is no barrier to join the astrology following and it is easy to find a plethora of information. According to Psychologist Graham Tyson, people turn towards astrology in times of stress for a way of coping[7]. People are able to look into the possible future and see when good times are supposed to arrive. In an American Psychological Association survey from 2014, Millennials and Gen Xers have become increasingly more stressed than older generations[7]. Thus, when considering the fact that astrology is favored by stressed people and the increased accessibility of astrological information, the reason for it's popularity becomes clear.
