Architecture

The profession of designing buildings, open areas, communities, and other artificial constructions and environments, usually with some regard to aesthetic effect. Architecture often includes the design or selection of furnishings and decorations, supervision of construction work, and the examination, restoration, or remodeling of existing buildings.

New Media in Architecture

A new phenomenon emerged and it is called media architecture. What has started out as a form of advanced advertising on buildings is now changing how buildings are designed and to some extent how they perform in public space; from urban screens to media façades and onward to something quite unique and ever-changing. This chapter discusses projects that investigate the relation between architecture, urban space, and media from technical aspects to aesthetic ones in an attempt to define the tools and the language of this new hybrid of media and architecture. Following the emergence of Web 2.0 and social media, the buildings are infused with a lot of technology enabling them to shift the control of their behavior to the users thus becoming more adaptable and “social”. A new generation of urban manifestations is beginning to form with experiments that span from entertainment to social awareness. Projects from URBANSCREEN’s 3D projection mapping that are short-lived and nonintrusive to REALITIES: UNITED’s Crystal Mesh or ART + COM and Ateliers Buckner’s refurbishment of the BMW Museum with a permanent media display fused with the building show not only the customized approach specific to the digital culture but also the potential of using new media in the built environment. The language of media architecture is one of variability, mass customization, and complexity, and is in resonance with the current information society. The idea of this topic stresses the need for architects' involvement in media architecture designs from the early stages underlining that media architecture is not just a trend in advertising but has the potential to form new urban spaces and intelligent custom buildings. Architectural engineering

Architectural engineering, also known as building engineering or architecture engineering, is an engineering discipline that deals with the technological aspects and multi-disciplinary approach to planning, design, construction, and operation of buildings, such as analysis and integrated design of environmental systems (energy conservation, HVAC, plumbing, lighting, fire protection, acoustics, vertical and horizontal transportation, electrical power systems), structural systems, behavior and properties of building components and materials, and construction management.

From the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to the construction of resilient buildings, architectural engineers are at the forefront of addressing several major challenges of the 21st century. They apply the latest scientific knowledge and technologies to the design of buildings. Architectural engineering as a relatively new licensed profession emerged in the 20th century as a result of the rapid technological developments. Architectural engineers are at the forefront of two major historical opportunities that today's world is immersed in: (1) that of rapidly advancing computer-technology, and (2) the parallel revolution arising from the need to create a sustainable planet.

3D Technology

Technology has already changed the practice of architecture, and it has the potential to change it even more radically. In architecture, the rise of the 21st-century media landscape has created connective tissue where none used to exist: the day-to-day work of architecture used to be relatively obscure, and now it is spotlighted and deconstructed regularly. The most successful architects are not those who shun this newfound audience, but rather engage with it. [2] 3D technology that is available today, architects can easily show clients renderings of their future construction, detailed architectural models in an array of materials, including rigid photopolymers ready for painting and finishing. They can even choose to provide a virtual guided tour of the building even before a single brick is laid. This has undoubtedly provided immeasurable convenience for architects.

Smartgeometry

An organization founded ten years ago by architects Hugh Whitehead, Lars Hesselgren, and J Parrish to discuss how digital tools and computational techniques are affecting architecture. [3] When the word “new media” is mentioned, most architects and designers think of the tools that are available to them in the design process, such as AutoCAD and BIM. This rapid development in technology has engendered different sentiments in designers. This not only made it difficult for designers and clients when communicating their visions and needs but also constrained the speed at which a project can be done. With the aid of digital cameras, iPhones, and similar media, designers can easily jot down their transient inspiration or instantly share their thoughts with colleagues or clients. Moreover, designers now can be working on several projects at once, which allows for more cross-referencing between projects.

Digital Fabrication

Technology is changing architecture. The world of computational design means architects are pursuing new frontiers where architecture can be generated through the writing of algorithms and software, where interactive physical mechanisms can be built that respond to their environment, adapting and evolving as necessary. Architectural invention and innovation. How designs use digital fabrication and material techniques to calibrate between virtual model and physical artifact. Is the design of the built environment using digital means. [4] Pairing up the processing power of high-end computers with advanced software allows us to integrate mathematics and computer programming languages into the design process toward the production of digital models. The linking of computational design to computational manufacture is redefining the practice of architecture.
